About Conroe

Conroe is the county seat of Montgomery County, Texas, about 40 miles north of downtown Houston. It began in the 1880s as a sawmill town in the East Texas pine forests, boomed after oil was discovered nearby in 1931, and is now one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, while keeping a historic downtown and a lakeside, outdoorsy character.

The big draw is Lake Conroe, a large reservoir northwest of town that is popular for boating, fishing, waterfront dining and lake houses. Downtown Conroe has a cultural district with the restored 1930s Crighton Theatre, the Montgomery County Courthouse, local shops, restaurants and craft breweries such as Southern Star Brewing, and the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County tells the region's story.

Pine forests surround the city. W. Goodrich Jones State Forest, on the south side, has easy trails, and Sam Houston National Forest to the north is crossed by the long Lone Star Hiking Trail. Houston's attractions are an easy day trip.

Best seasonOctober to May; summer is hot and humid but ideal for time on Lake Conroe.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for the lake, downtown and the forests.
ArrivingGeorge Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston is about 35 minutes south by car.
