About Missouri City

Missouri City is a city of about 75,000 people in Fort Bend and Harris counties, on the southwest edge of Houston. It began in the 1890s, when land agents promoted the area to farmers from Missouri, which gave the town its name. For decades it was a small railroad and farming community; it incorporated in 1956 and grew quickly with master-planned neighborhoods such as Quail Valley and Sienna.

Today it is one of the most diverse suburbs in the Houston area, with strong African American, Hispanic and Asian communities. The city's best-known landmark is the Freedom Tree, a historic live oak tied by local tradition to the announcement of emancipation in 1865, and the city's Juneteenth celebration and parade draw crowds each June.

Visitors will find a large network of parks, including the lakes and observation tower of Buffalo Run Park and the fishing lake and skate park of Community Park, plus public golf at Quail Valley. Downtown Houston, the Texas Medical Center and Sugar Land are all close by.

Best seasonOctober to April, when it is mild; June for the Juneteenth celebration.
Ideal stayHalf a day, or a base for southwest Houston and Sugar Land.
ArrivingHouston Hobby Airport is about 30 minutes east; Bush Intercontinental is about 45 minutes north.
