Baytown is a city of about 83,000 people on Galveston Bay, about 25 miles east of downtown Houston. It grew from oil discoveries at Goose Creek in the early 1900s and is home to one of the largest refineries in the country, but it also offers bayfront parks, wetland trails and a revived historic downtown.
The Fred Hartman Bridge, a cable-stayed span over the Houston Ship Channel, is a striking landmark, and the Baytown Nature Center occupies a peninsula once filled with homes, now restored as wetlands with birding trails, fishing and crabbing. The Goose Creek Trail follows the creek through shaded woods and parks.
Historic Texas Avenue has murals, restaurants and the Baytown Historical Museum, and Roseland Park displays a historic Southern Pacific steam locomotive. Pirates Bay Water Park is a summer favorite for families, and the San Jacinto Battleground and Battleship Texas area across the channel are close by.
Twin-tower cable-stayed bridge opened in 1995 that carries State Highway 146 over the Houston Ship Channel between Baytown and La Porte. Its diamond-shaped towers are a regional landmark. Get the best view from Baytown waterfront parks or drive across for views of ships.
Peninsula on Galveston Bay where a neighborhood flooded by subsidence and hurricanes was turned into a nature park with trails, fishing piers, butterfly gardens and great birdwatching. Herons, egrets and spoonbills are common. A small entry fee applies; bring binoculars.
Environmental education center with exhibits and live animals showing the wetlands, bays and wildlife of the upper Texas coast. It runs nature programs, kayak trips and school events. It is free to visit and a good stop before going out to the Baytown Nature Center.
Paved trail following Goose Creek through central Baytown, linking several parks with bridges, shade trees and creek views. It is good for walking, running and cycling. Start near Roseland Park and head north; bring water, as Texas heat builds quickly in summer.
Large park on Goose Creek near its mouth with a boat ramp, fishing pier, playground, pavilions and a public pool. It is a popular spot for family gatherings and fishing. The trailhead for the Goose Creek Trail starts here; parking is free but busy on weekends.
Downtown park near Texas Avenue with lawns, public art and an amphitheater that hosts the city's concerts, festivals and holiday events. It is a pleasant place to sit after a walk downtown. Check the city calendar for free summer concerts and seasonal celebrations.
Old main street of Baytown's downtown, born in the Goose Creek oil boom of the early 1900s, with restored storefronts, murals, cafes and local shops. It hosts art walks and seasonal events. Walk the street in an hour and look for the colorful murals on side walls.
Local history museum telling the story of Baytown from early settlers and the Goose Creek oil field to the giant refinery that shaped the city. Exhibits include photographs, tools and household items. It is small and free; check opening days before you visit.
City-run water park with a pirate ship play structure, a lazy river, tube and body slides and a wave-style pool, popular with local families. It opens in summer only. Arrive at opening time on hot days, bring sunscreen and buy tickets online when available.
Free car ferry crossing the Houston Ship Channel near Baytown, continuing a crossing that has operated since the 1820s. The short ride passes big ships and refineries and leads to the San Jacinto Monument area. Expect waits at peak times; check status, as weather can stop service.
