About Lake Charles

Lake Charles is a city of about 80,000 people in southwest Louisiana, the seat of Calcasieu Parish and the largest city between Houston and Baton Rouge. Set on the shore of Lake Charles and the Calcasieu River, it grew as a lumber and shipping town in the late 1800s, then as a center for the oil, gas and petrochemical industry, and more recently as a casino resort destination.

The city's Cajun and Creole culture shines at the Mardi Gras Museum of Imperial Calcasieu, which displays one of the largest collections of Mardi Gras costumes in the world, and in a busy calendar of festivals, from Mardi Gras to the pirate-themed Contraband Days. The Charpentier Historic District preserves dozens of blocks of Victorian homes built by local carpenters, and the restored 1911 City Hall houses an arts and cultural center.

Visitors also come for the lakefront casinos, golf and live music, for fishing and boating, and for the Creole Nature Trail, a scenic byway into marshes full of birds and alligators that leads south to the Gulf of Mexico.

Best seasonOctober to May, avoiding the hottest summer months; February for Mardi Gras.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for the city, a casino resort and the Creole Nature Trail.
ArrivingLake Charles Regional Airport has flights to Houston; Houston is about two hours west via I-10.
