About Port Arthur

Port Arthur is a Gulf Coast city of about 55,000 people on the western shore of Sabine Lake in southeast Texas, near the Louisiana border. It was founded in the 1890s by railroad promoter Arthur Stilwell as the terminus of his line from Kansas City, and the 1901 Spindletop oil discovery nearby turned it into one of the largest refining centers in the United States.

The city has a rich cultural mix shaped by Cajun, African American, Mexican and Vietnamese communities, and it is the hometown of singer Janis Joplin. The Museum of the Gulf Coast celebrates regional history and the many famous musicians from the area. Elegant early 1900s homes such as the Pompeiian Villa and Rose Hill Manor recall the city's boom years.

Nature and history lie close by: the Sabine Pass Battleground State Historic Site marks a famous 1863 Civil War battle, and Sea Rim State Park and McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge protect beaches, marshes and birdlife along the coast. Pleasure Island in Sabine Lake offers fishing, and Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas fills downtown each winter.

Best seasonOctober to April for milder weather, birding and Mardi Gras; summers are hot and humid.
Ideal stayOne to two days, combined with nearby Beaumont.
ArrivingJack Brooks Regional Airport is in nearby Nederland; Houston's airports are about 90 minutes west.
