About Seguin

A giant pecan sculpture stands on the courthouse square in Seguin, a nod to the pecan trees that shade its creeks and to the town's claim as a pecan capital of Texas. This Guadalupe River city of about 30,000, half an hour east of San Antonio, mixes small-town calm with deep Texas history.

Founded in 1838 by Texas Rangers and named after Juan Seguin, a Tejano hero of the Texas Revolution, the town grew among German and Mexican settlers. Builders here pioneered early concrete, known as limecrete, and dozens of these buildings survive, including the 1854 Sebastopol House. Later came the Art Deco Guadalupe County Courthouse and the restored Texas Theatre.

Today visitors walk the downtown square, follow the spring-fed creek through Walnut Springs Park, picnic by the river in Max Starcke Park, and visit small museums such as Los Nogales and the nutcracker collection at Pape's Pecan House. Families head for the rides at ZDT's Amusement Park, and boaters enjoy Lake McQueeney upstream. New Braunfels and the Hill Country are a short drive away.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November, when Texas heat is milder.
Ideal stayOne day for downtown, the parks and museums; add a day for Lake McQueeney or ZDT's.
ArrivingSan Antonio International Airport is about 35 minutes west via I-10.
