Garden Grove was founded in 1874, when Alonzo Cook laid out a small farming town on the flat land of central Orange County. Its fields grew walnuts, oranges, chili peppers and above all strawberries, and the town was incorporated in 1956 as new neighborhoods spread across the farmland. The Strawberry Festival, held every Memorial Day weekend since 1958, still celebrates those roots with rides, a parade and giant strawberry shortcake.
From the 1970s Garden Grove became a home for many Vietnamese refugees, and together with neighboring Westminster it is the heart of Little Saigon, the largest Vietnamese community outside Vietnam, famous for its pho shops, bakeries and markets. Garden Grove Boulevard also has a busy Koreatown, and the city's food scene is one of the most varied in Orange County.
Its best-known landmark is Christ Cathedral, the former Crystal Cathedral, a dazzling glass church designed by Philip Johnson and completed in 1980. Historic Main Street keeps a small-town feel with shops and the Gem Theater, the Stanley Ranch Museum preserves early farm buildings, and the Grove District hotels sit just south of the Disneyland Resort.
Christ Cathedral is the Catholic cathedral of Orange, housed in the famous glass building designed by Philip Johnson and opened in 1980 as the Crystal Cathedral. The campus also has a tall bell tower, gardens and the older Tower of Hope. Free self-guided visits are possible, and guided tours are offered on set days.
Historic Main Street is Garden Grove's original small downtown, a short tree-lined stretch with family restaurants, pubs, cafes and the Gem Theater. It is the most walkable part of the city and hosts events and holiday celebrations. Come for an easy dinner and stroll, then catch a show at the theater.
The Grove District is Garden Grove's hotel and dining strip along Harbor Boulevard just south of the Disneyland Resort. It has many hotels, chain restaurants and entertainment spots, making it a convenient base for theme park visits. Some hotels run shuttles to the parks, which saves on parking fees.
The Gem Theater is a small historic theater on Garden Grove's Main Street that now serves as an intimate live performance venue for local theater companies, concerts and community shows. Seating is close to the stage, which makes even small productions feel personal. Check the city's arts calendar for current shows.
The Stanley Ranch Museum is run by the Garden Grove Historical Society and preserves the old Stanley family ranch house and other historic buildings moved to the site. Inside you see furnished rooms, farm tools and displays on the town's farming past. Opening days are limited, so check ahead before you visit.
The Garden Grove Strawberry Festival has been held every Memorial Day weekend since 1958 and is one of the largest community festivals in the region. Expect carnival rides, a parade, live entertainment, food booths and plenty of strawberry shortcake. It is held near Main Street; arrive early to find parking.
Village Green Park is a grassy park on Euclid Street just off Historic Main Street, with shade trees, paths and open lawns that host the Strawberry Festival and other city events. It is a pleasant place for a picnic or short walk. The Stanley Ranch Museum sits next door, so you can easily combine the two.
A stretch of Garden Grove Boulevard is home to Orange County's Korean community, with Korean barbecue restaurants, tofu houses, bakeries, karaoke spots and grocery stores. It is one of the best places in the county for Korean food. Evenings are busiest, and many restaurants are in strip malls with free parking.
Atlantis Play Center is a small play park inside Garden Grove Park, known for its 1960s sea-themed concrete sculptures, including a large sea serpent slide. It is designed for young children and has shaded areas and picnic spots. It is open on limited days and may charge a small entry fee, so check before going.
Great Wolf Lodge Southern California is a family resort on Harbor Boulevard with a large indoor water park, water slides, a wave pool and kids' activities like an arcade and interactive games. Water park access is mainly for hotel guests, though day passes are sometimes sold. Book early for school holidays.
