About Lawrence

Lawrence is a historic mill city of about 89,000 people on the Merrimack River in northeastern Massachusetts, about 30 miles north of Boston. Founded in 1845 as a planned industrial city, it was once the textile capital of the world, and the massive brick mills along its canals still define the skyline.

The Great Stone Dam, completed in 1848, powered the mills through a system of canals that you can explore in Lawrence Heritage State Park, whose visitor center in a restored boarding house tells the stories of immigrant mill workers. The city is famous for the 1912 Bread and Roses strike, commemorated each Labor Day weekend with the Bread and Roses Heritage Festival.

Today Lawrence is a vibrant, largely Latino city with excellent Dominican and Puerto Rican food along Essex and Broadway. Holy Rosary Church and other grand churches recall earlier waves of immigrants, the restored mills hold lofts and studios, and Den Rock Park offers woodland trails and cliffs on the city's edge.

Best seasonMay to October for the canal walk and parks, with the Bread and Roses festival on Labor Day weekend.
Ideal stayHalf a day to one day for the heritage park, mills and food, often combined with Boston.
ArrivingBoston Logan Airport is about 40 minutes south; the MBTA commuter rail connects Lawrence to Boston.
