About Holyoke

Holyoke is a city of about 38,000 people on the Connecticut River in Hampden County, western Massachusetts, a few miles north of Springfield. It was one of the first planned industrial cities in the United States: in the 1840s investors built a great dam across the river and a system of canals that powered dozens of mills.

By the late 1800s Holyoke was the largest paper-making center in the world, earning the nickname Paper City, and silk, textile and machinery mills filled its canals. In 1895 William G. Morgan invented volleyball at the Holyoke YMCA, and the city is home to the Volleyball Hall of Fame. Irish, French Canadian and later Puerto Rican communities shaped its neighborhoods, and its St. Patrick's Parade is one of the largest in the country.

Visitors start at Holyoke Heritage State Park with its vintage carousel and museums, then explore the canals, the Wistariahurst mansion and the dam's fish lift. Mount Tom State Reservation and the Dinosaur Footprints reservation offer outdoor trips, and Northampton is a short drive north.

Best seasonMay to October; mid-March for the St. Patrick's Parade and May for the fish lift.
Ideal stayOne day, combined with Northampton or Springfield.
ArrivingBradley International Airport is about 40 minutes away; I-91 runs through the city and Amtrak's Valley Flyer stops downtown.
