About Cookeville

Waterfalls are Cookeville's secret: within half an hour of this Upper Cumberland city, rivers plunge off the edge of the Highland Rim into deep gorges at Burgess Falls and Cummins Falls. The town itself is a friendly college city on Interstate 40, roughly halfway between Nashville and Knoxville.

Cookeville took shape after the Tennessee Central Railway arrived in the 1890s, and its 1909 depot is now a museum at the heart of the West Side, a historic district of restaurants and shops along Broad Street. Tennessee Tech University adds a symphony orchestra, theater and a lively student population, and Dogwood Park hosts outdoor concerts downtown.

Beyond the waterfalls, the area offers the eroded rock arches of Window Cliffs State Natural Area, easy paddling and walking at Cane Creek Park, and boating in the wooded coves of Center Hill Lake to the southwest.

Best seasonApril and May for wildflowers and full waterfalls; October for fall color in the gorges.
Ideal stayTwo days for downtown, the depot and two state park waterfalls.
ArrivingCookeville is on I-40 about 80 miles east of Nashville International Airport and about 100 miles west of Knoxville.
