About Manchester

Manchester is the largest city in New Hampshire and in northern New England, set on the Merrimack River at the Amoskeag Falls. Native Pennacook people fished the falls for centuries, and in the 1800s the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company built a mile-long line of brick mills along the river that became the largest cotton textile complex in the world.

The mills closed in the 1930s, but the vast brick buildings remain and have been reused as offices, restaurants, apartments and SEE Science Center, which displays a huge LEGO model of the mill yard. Today Manchester has about 115,000 residents and a lively downtown along Elm Street with restaurants, bars, the Palace Theatre and the SNHU Arena.

Manchester also has fine culture and history. The Currier Museum of Art has European and American art and owns the Zimmerman House, a rare Frank Lloyd Wright home open for tours. The Millyard Museum tells the story of the mills, and the Merrimack River trails, Veterans Memorial Park and the Amoskeag footbridge offer river views. The White Mountains and the seacoast are both about an hour away.

Best seasonMay to October for river trails and fall foliage.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the Millyard, the Currier Museum, Elm Street and the riverfront.
ArrivingManchester-Boston Regional Airport is about 10 minutes south; Boston is about an hour away.
