About Amherst

Amherst is a large suburban town just northeast of Buffalo, New York, with about 130,000 residents. It includes the historic Village of Williamsville and the hamlets of Snyder, Eggertsville, Getzville and East Amherst, and it is home to the University at Buffalo's sprawling North Campus.

Williamsville is the town's historic heart, a walkable village on Main Street that grew around mills on Ellicott Creek in the early 1800s. Its old water mill still stands, and Glen Park has a small waterfall, Glen Falls, framed by stone walls and footbridges. Island Park and Garrison Park add green space in the village center.

Elsewhere in Amherst, Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village preserves historic buildings, Amherst State Park has trails on the grounds of a former convent, and the Ellicott Creek Trailway links neighborhoods by bike. Downtown Buffalo is about 20 minutes away, and Niagara Falls is about 30 minutes northwest.

Best seasonMay to October for parks and trails; fall color peaks in mid October.
Ideal stayOne day, often as a base for Buffalo and Niagara Falls.
ArrivingBuffalo Niagara International Airport is about 10 minutes from Williamsville; a car is the easiest way to get around.
