About Port Hope

Port Hope is a town on the north shore of Lake Ontario, where the Ganaraska River enters the lake east of Toronto. Prosperous in the nineteenth century as a port and milling center, it kept much of its Victorian-era downtown intact, and its main commercial street is often cited as one of the best-preserved in Ontario.

Walton Street, lined with brick storefronts, holds antique shops, bookstores and cafes, and the restored Capitol Theatre, with its atmospheric ceiling, hosts films and live performances. Port Hope Town Hall and the heritage homes along John Street and King Street reward architecture buffs on foot. The Ganaraska River draws anglers and spectators when trout and salmon run upstream, and the harbour area near the historic train station leads to the sands of West Beach and East Beach. Inland, the Ganaraska Forest Centre offers trails for hiking, biking and skiing, while a drive-in theatre, a farmers market and local festivals round out the summer.

Port Hope suits travelers wanting a heritage-town escape within easy reach of Toronto. It pairs naturally with nearby Cobourg and the countryside of Northumberland County. Summer and early fall are the best seasons for walking, beaches and events.

Best seasonJune through October brings beach weather, festivals and the fall salmon run.
Ideal stayA day trip or relaxed weekend covers downtown, the river and the beaches.
ArrivingMost visitors drive Highway 401 from Toronto; VIA Rail also stops in town.
