Henrietta is a town of about 47,000 people in Monroe County, New York, just south of the city of Rochester. Formed in 1818, it was named after Henrietta Laura Pulteney, whose family held large land claims in western New York, and for its first century and a half it was mostly farmland.
The town changed when the Rochester Institute of Technology moved to a new campus here in the late 1960s. RIT is now one of the region's largest universities, known for its technology, imaging and design programs and as home of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and its campus brings art, sports and events to Henrietta. Along Route 15 and Jefferson Road the town is also the area's main shopping district.
Visitors find quieter corners in Tinker Nature Park and its historic cobblestone homestead and along the Lehigh Valley Trail. Downtown Rochester, the Genesee River and the Erie Canal are all about 15 minutes away, and the Finger Lakes are within an hour's drive.
A large private university whose brick campus in Henrietta is known for modern architecture, art and design programs and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. Visitors can walk the quad, see public sculpture and visit galleries. Park in visitor lots and check the campus events calendar before you go.
A rare book library in RIT's Wallace Library devoted to the history of printing, typography and book arts, with historic printing presses, fine press books and type specimens. Exhibits are free and open to the public. Check opening hours, and ask staff about demonstrations on the working presses.
A towering steel sculpture by metal artist Albert Paley, installed on the RIT campus in 2003 and rising about 70 feet over the main walkway. Its twisting forms are especially striking against a blue sky. It is free to see any time; combine it with a stroll across the campus quad.
RIT's ice hockey arena, opened in 2014, home to the Tigers men's and women's Division I teams. Games draw loud, enthusiastic student crowds and seat around 4,000 people. Buy tickets early for big rivalry games, and come for a weekend game between October and March.
A town park of about 68 acres with easy trails and boardwalks through woods and wetlands, plus the Hansen Nature Center, which runs nature programs. It is popular with families, birdwatchers and dog walkers. The trails are short and flat, so it is a good quick stop; it is free to enter.
A cobblestone farmhouse built around 1830 by James Tinker, now a museum inside Tinker Nature Park. Rooms show farm life in the 1800s, and a barn and outbuildings display old tools and equipment. It opens on select days and for events, so check the town schedule before your visit.
A multi-use trail on the bed of the old Lehigh Valley Railroad that runs through rural Henrietta and on toward Rush, Mendon and Victor. Its gravel surface suits walkers, runners, horseback riders and cyclists on wider tires. In winter it is used for cross-country skiing; parking areas sit at road crossings.
The Rochester area's largest enclosed shopping mall, on West Henrietta Road, with department stores, national chains and a food court. The surrounding Jefferson Road and Route 15 corridor adds big-box stores and many restaurants. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to shop.
