Irondequoit is a town of about 51,000 people just north of Rochester, New York, set between the Genesee River, Lake Ontario and the wide Irondequoit Bay. Once known for orchards and lakeside resorts, it is now a residential suburb with an unusual amount of shoreline, parks and old-fashioned summer fun.
The town's best-known attraction is Seabreeze Amusement Park, one of the oldest operating amusement parks in the country, with its classic wooden roller coaster, the Jack Rabbit, and a hand-carved carousel. Nearby, the Irondequoit Bay outlet and Sea Breeze area have marinas and restaurants by the water, and Parkside Whispering Pines is a historic miniature golf course from the 1930s.
Irondequoit Bay Park West offers trails and views over the bay, while Durand Eastman Park on Lake Ontario has beaches, wooded hills and an arboretum. The I-Square development hosts a rooftop garden and summer concerts. Downtown Rochester's museums and festivals are about 15 minutes away.

A long, deep bay that opens into Lake Ontario, lined with wooded bluffs, marinas and waterfront homes. It is popular for boating, kayaking, fishing and, in winter, ice fishing. Rent a kayak at the outlet or view it from the Route 104 bridge and the parks along its shores.
A large park on the Lake Ontario shore with wooded hills, small lakes, an arboretum with flowering trees in spring, a golf course and a sandy beach. Trails wind through the ravines. Swimming is allowed only when lifeguards are on duty, so check beach status before you go.
A small state park at the north end of Irondequoit Bay with a boat launch, fishing access and a channel walkway. It is a handy place to put in a kayak or watch boats heading to the lake. Parking can fill on summer weekends, so arrive early if you are launching a boat.
A county park on the steep west bank of Irondequoit Bay, with hiking and mountain biking trails, overlooks and a lodge. The views over the bay are best in fall color season. Trails are hilly and can be muddy in spring, so wear sturdy shoes and allow an hour or two.
A small miniature golf course opened in the 1930s near Seabreeze and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with stone and concrete obstacles built in the early style of the game. It is cheap, nostalgic fun for all ages. Open in warm months; it gets busy on summer evenings.
A pier and breakwall at the outlet where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario, popular for fishing, sunset walks and watching boats pass through the channel. Restaurants and ice cream stands are nearby. Watch your footing on the breakwall when waves are high, and bring a jacket.
A mixed-use development in Irondequoit with restaurants, shops, a bandshell, an event center and a rooftop garden with views. It hosts summer concerts, markets and holiday events. Check the event calendar, and climb to the rooftop for a look over the town.
