About Ithaca

Ithaca is a small city of about 32,000 people at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It is home to Cornell University, founded in 1865 on East Hill, and Ithaca College on South Hill, which give the town a youthful, progressive and outdoorsy character far beyond its size.

The landscape is the star. Creeks plunge through deep shale gorges on their way to the lake, inspiring the local slogan Ithaca is Gorges. Ithaca Falls drops right inside the city, the Cascadilla Gorge Trail climbs from downtown to the Cornell campus past a string of waterfalls, and Buttermilk Falls and Robert H. Treman state parks offer gorge hikes and summer swimming just outside town.

Culture comes from the campuses and a lively downtown. The pedestrian Ithaca Commons is lined with shops and restaurants, the Ithaca Farmers Market fills a waterfront pavilion on weekends, and Cornell offers the Johnson Museum of Art, the Botanic Gardens and the Lab of Ornithology. Wineries along the Cayuga Wine Trail and Taughannock Falls are a short drive north.

Best seasonMay to October for waterfalls, swimming and the farmers market; fall foliage peaks in early to mid October.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for gorges, campus, downtown and a winery trip.
ArrivingIthaca Tompkins International Airport is 10 minutes from downtown; Syracuse is about an hour's drive.
