Youngstown is a city of about 60,000 people in northeast Ohio, halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh and the seat of Mahoning County. Founded in 1797 by John Young, it became one of America's great steel towns, and the closure of many mills beginning in 1977 shaped the city for decades. Today it is rebuilding around its university, arts and parks.
The city's crown jewel is Mill Creek Park, a long gorge of lakes, waterfalls, woods and gardens, with the historic Lanterman's Mill and Fellows Riverside Gardens. The Butler Institute of American Art, founded in 1919, was the first museum devoted entirely to American art, and the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor tells the story of the steel era.
Downtown has grand theaters such as the DeYor Performing Arts Center and nearby Stambaugh Auditorium, along with restaurants, Youngstown State University and the Covelli Centre. Lake Milton, Pymatuning Lake and the Amish country of eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania are good day trips.
A huge park stretching through a wooded gorge on the city's south side, with three lakes, waterfalls, more than 20 miles of trails, scenic drives, golf courses and historic bridges. Founded in 1891, it is one of the oldest metro park districts in Ohio. Visit in October for spectacular fall color.
A beautiful public garden at the north end of Mill Creek Park, with rose gardens, perennial borders, lawns and an overlook above Lake Glacier, plus a visitor center with a cafe and gift shop. Spring tulips and June roses are highlights. Free admission; very popular for wedding photos on weekends.
A historic park on the north side near Youngstown State University, surrounded by grand early 20th-century mansions built by steel and industrial families. It has lawns, a pond area, a playground and a pavilion. Walk the park and nearby streets to see the city's finest historic homes.
A restored 1840s gristmill beside a waterfall in Mill Creek Park, where you can see the wooden water wheel and millstones at work and buy freshly ground cornmeal and flour. It is one of the most photographed spots in Youngstown. Open seasonally; the covered bridge next to it makes a great photo spot.
A graceful 1895 steel suspension bridge spanning Mill Creek near Lake Cohasset, known locally as the Cinderella Bridge. It is still open to cars and pedestrians and is a favorite photo stop. Combine it with a walk on the Gorge Trail, which passes waterfalls and stone cliffs nearby.
The seat of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, a modern cathedral built in the 1950s after a fire destroyed the earlier church, with a tall facade, stained glass and a large mosaic. It stands at the edge of downtown. Visitors are welcome outside of services; please be respectful during Mass.
Founded in 1919 as the first museum dedicated to American art, with works by Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, Edward Hopper and many others in a marble building next to Youngstown State University. Admission is free, and it is one of the best art museums in Ohio. Allow two to three hours.
A museum run by the Ohio History Connection that tells the story of the Mahoning Valley steel industry and its workers through exhibits, recreated scenes, tools and film. Known locally as the Steel Museum, it explains how steel shaped the city. Check hours, which are limited and seasonal.
The 1905 Arts and Crafts style home of the Arms family on Wick Avenue, run by the Mahoning Valley Historical Society with original furnishings and exhibits on the valley's history. Guided and self-guided tours show early 20th-century life. It is a short walk from the Butler Institute.
A grand neoclassical concert hall opened in 1926 overlooking Wick Park, with a large auditorium, an elegant ballroom and excellent acoustics. It hosts concerts, touring shows and community events. Even if you are not seeing a show, the facade with its columns and wide steps is worth a look.
A downtown performing arts complex that includes the restored 1931 Powers Auditorium, a former movie palace with a lavish interior, and the smaller Ford Family Recital Hall. It is home to the Youngstown Symphony and hosts Broadway tours and ballet. Check the schedule and arrive early to look around.
A downtown arena next to the Mahoning River that hosts concerts, family shows, hockey and other events. The adjacent Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre and Wean Park host outdoor summer concerts on the riverbank. Check event calendars and arrive early, as parking downtown fills up on show nights.
