About Tapachula

Tapachula is the main city of the Soconusco, the fertile coastal plain in the far southwest of Chiapas near the Guatemalan border. Above it rises the Tacaná Volcano, and the surrounding lowlands and foothills have long produced coffee, cacao, bananas and tropical fruit. Waves of immigration, notably from China, Japan and Germany, left their mark on the region's food and plantations.

The city's social life gathers around Parque Miguel Hidalgo, framed by the San Agustín Church and the old municipal palace, which now houses the Casa de Cultura and the Soconusco Archaeological Museum. Mercado Escobar is a lively place to see regional produce. Tapachula's Chinese heritage shows up in its many Chinese restaurants, and the municipal cemetery contains graves that reflect that history. Just outside the city, Izapa is an important early archaeological site known for its carved stelae. Tuxtla Chico, a nearby colonial town, adds an older church and cacao traditions.

Most travelers pass through rather than linger, but the region rewards those interested in coffee and mountain scenery. Climbing toward Unión Juárez leads into cooler air and the Coffee Route, where fincas welcome visitors. Experienced hikers attempt Tacaná with a guide. The lowlands stay hot and humid year-round, with heavy rain in summer.

Best seasonNovember through April, the drier months, are the most comfortable for exploring the lowlands and volcano slopes.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers the city, Izapa and a night up on the Coffee Route.
ArrivingTapachula International Airport has flights from Mexico City; buses connect it with the rest of Chiapas.
