About Teotitlán del Valle

Teotitlán del Valle is a Zapotec village at the foot of the Sierra Juárez in Oaxaca's Tlacolula Valley, famous for its wool weaving. Many families have worked the loom for generations, and Zapotec is still widely spoken in homes and at the market. The craft shapes daily life here, from sheep wool drying in courtyards to the dyes simmering in pots.

The best way to understand the village is to visit the family weaving workshops, where weavers often demonstrate carding, spinning and the use of natural dyes such as cochineal, indigo and wild plants. Rugs and motifs range from ancient fretwork patterns echoing those of Mitla to contemporary designs. The Preciosa Sangre de Cristo church, built on top of a pre-Hispanic temple, still shows carved stones from the earlier structure in its walls. A small community museum covers local history and weaving, and the municipal market is a good place for breakfast or hot chocolate. The village celebrates its patron festival in July, when the Danza de la Pluma is performed.

Buying directly from the artisans, after time spent learning how a rug is made, is far more rewarding than a quick browse. Outdoor options include birdwatching at the Piedra Azul dam and hikes toward El Picacho, a sacred mountain, and the Cuevita del Pedimento. Local guides can be arranged through the community tour service.

Best seasonOctober through May for dry weather; July brings the patron festival and the Danza de la Pluma.
Ideal stayA half day for workshops, or an overnight stay to hike and explore slowly.
ArrivingColectivos and taxis run from Oaxaca City along Highway 190, with a short turnoff to the village.
