About Chetumal

Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo, a modest government city on the Bay of Chetumal near the border with Belize. It sees far fewer visitors than the resort towns to the north, which gives it an everyday Mexican character, with wooden Caribbean-style houses in older streets and a waterfront favored by local families in the evening.

The Malecón runs along the bay and is the natural place to start, especially around sunset when the heat eases. The Museo de la Cultura Maya is the city's main cultural stop, with exhibits covering Maya cosmology, architecture and daily life. Nearby, the Centro Cultural de las Bellas Artes occupies a historic school building, and the Monumento al Renacimiento stands on the bayfront as a symbol of the city's rebuilding after a destructive hurricane in 1955. The waterfront drive leads north to Calderitas, a small fishing village with seafood restaurants, and to Oxtankah, a quiet Maya site set among trees. Larger archaeological sites lie inland, including Kohunlich with its stucco masks, the temples of Dzibanché and Kinichná, and Chacchoben toward Bacalar.

Chetumal works best as a base for exploring southern Quintana Roo or as a stop before crossing into Belize. It suits independent travelers interested in Maya history rather than beach resorts. Bacalar's lagoon is a short drive away.

Best seasonNovember through April is drier and less humid for exploring ruins and the bayfront.
Ideal stayOne to two days covers the city, with extra time for inland ruins.
ArrivingChetumal International Airport has flights from Mexico City, and the city is reachable by Highway 307 and the Tren Maya.
