About Mitla

Mitla is a town in the eastern Tlacolula Valley of Oaxaca built beside one of the most distinctive archaeological sites in Mexico. Its name comes from the Nahuatl Mictlán, often translated as place of the dead, and it served as an important Zapotec religious center that was still active when the Spanish arrived. What sets it apart is ornament rather than scale: walls covered in intricate geometric stone mosaics.

The site is split into several clusters. The Columns Group holds the best-preserved buildings, including the Hall of Columns, whose thick monolithic pillars once supported a roof, and inner patios where the mosaic fretwork covers entire walls in stepped and zigzag patterns made of thousands of fitted stones. The Church Group sits beneath the colonial Templo de San Pablo, which was built directly on top of pre-Hispanic platforms, partly with their stones. The Adobe, Arroyo and South groups are scattered through town and less visited. Next to the ruins, the Mercado de Artesanías sells textiles and embroidered clothing.

Mitla is usually a stop on a day trip from Oaxaca City, combined with mezcal palenques in the valley and the hilltop ruins of Yagul. The Prehistoric Caves of Yagul and Mitla, part of a World Heritage Site, protect early evidence of plant domestication.

Best seasonOctober through May, the dry season, when the valley is sunny and roads are reliable.
Ideal stayA half day for the ruins and town, or a full day with Yagul and palenques.
ArrivingMost visitors come by tour, colectivo or car from Oaxaca City along Highway 190.
