About Homún

Homún is a small Maya town in the interior of Yucatán, southeast of Mérida, surrounded by flat scrubland that hides an unusual concentration of cenotes. These natural sinkholes lie along an arc of geological features often linked to the edge of the ancient Chicxulub impact crater, a zone known as the Anillo de Cenotes. Many of them are run by local families, making cenote tourism an important part of the town's livelihood.

Visitors usually hire a mototaxi driver in town who knows the routes between sites, then spend the day moving from one cenote to the next. Each has its own character: some are open to the sky, others sit inside caves reached by wooden stairs, with shafts of light falling onto clear, cool water. Cenote Hool Kosom, Cenote Tza Ujun Kat and the Los 3 Oches complex are among the names travelers mention most often. Facilities range from simple ladders and life jackets to small restaurants. The Homún main square, with its church and market stalls, is pleasant for a meal between swims. Nearby Cuzamá offers more cenotes, while the pottery town of Ticul, the convent town of Maní and the ruins of Uxmal lie within driving distance.

Homún suits swimmers and travelers who enjoy a relaxed, hands-on day in the countryside. Weekdays are quieter, and arriving early gives the best light in open cenotes.

Best seasonThe drier months from November to April offer comfortable temperatures and clear water.
Ideal stayOne full day covers several cenotes; stay locally for a more relaxed pace.
ArrivingMost visitors drive or take a colectivo from Mérida, then use local mototaxis.
