About Agua Azul Cascades

The Agua Azul Cascades are a long series of waterfalls and pools in the forested lowlands of northern Chiapas, along the road between Palenque and Ocosingo. The water owes its striking turquoise color to dissolved minerals from the limestone it flows over, which also build the terraced rock formations that shape the falls. The site is managed by local Indigenous communities, and its appearance changes considerably with the seasons.

Visitors arrive at a parking area and follow a path upstream lined with vendors selling fruit, snacks and crafts. The lower cascades are the most dramatic, with broad curtains of water tumbling over stepped ledges. Higher up, the river splits around small islands, creating double streams and quieter pools. Designated swimming areas allow a dip in calmer sections, though currents can be strong and posted warnings deserve respect. The walk continues to upstream viewpoints where the crowds thin out and the limestone formations are easier to appreciate. Many tours combine Agua Azul with Misol-Ha, a tall single waterfall with a path leading behind it, and with the ruins and forest of Palenque National Park.

The cascades suit travelers based in Palenque who want a day of nature and swimming. In the rainy season, runoff can turn the water brown, so the drier months usually bring the famous blue. Checking current road conditions locally is sensible.

Best seasonThe dry season, roughly February to May, gives the clearest blue water and safest swimming.
Ideal stayA half or full day, usually combined with Misol-Ha on a tour from Palenque.
ArrivingMost visitors arrive by road on organized tours or colectivos from Palenque.
