About Celestún

Celestún is a fishing village on the western edge of the Yucatán Peninsula, set on a sandbar between the Gulf of Mexico and a long, shallow estuary. That estuary is protected as the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve, a mix of mangrove forest, salt flats and lagoon where fresh water from underground springs meets the sea. The town itself is low-key, with pastel houses, a small church and a beach lined with seafood restaurants.

The main reason people come is the birdlife, and especially the American flamingos that feed in the estuary's shallows. Boat tours leave from the dock near the Parador Turístico and the bridge, gliding past flocks of pink birds, herons and pelicans, and often stopping at Bird Island and the mangrove tunnels. Some tours pause at the Ojo de Agua Baldiosera, a clear freshwater spring where passengers can take a dip. Canoes and kayaks offer a quieter way to slip into the mangroves. Afterward, visitors walk the beaches of Playa Norte and Playa Sur, look around the lighthouse and church, or linger in the town square in the evening.

Celestún works well as a day trip from Mérida, though staying overnight allows early-morning boat rides and sunsets over the Gulf. Flamingo numbers vary through the year, so local guides are the best source on timing.

Best seasonWinter and early spring bring pleasant temperatures and typically larger flamingo gatherings in the estuary.
Ideal stayA full day works from Mérida; one night adds sunrise birding and a quiet evening.
ArrivingVisitors drive or take a bus west from Mérida, the nearest city with a major airport.
