About Xalapa

Xalapa, the capital of Veracruz, is built on hilly terrain in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental, where frequent mist keeps the city green. Its strong university presence and cultural institutions have earned it the nickname Athens of Veracruz, and the city lends its name to the jalapeño pepper. Steep streets, coffee shops and parks give it a lively but unhurried atmosphere.

The Catedral Metropolitana, built on a slope, dominates the center beside Parque Juárez, a terraced park with views over the surrounding hills on clear days. The Museo de Antropología de Xalapa is one of the finest in Mexico, with a remarkable collection of Olmec colossal heads and Gulf Coast sculpture displayed in a light-filled building set among gardens. The Pinacoteca Diego Rivera shows works by the muralist, and Patio Muñoz is a small plaza with cafés. The Jardín Botánico Francisco Javier Clavijero showcases cloud-forest plants, while the Museo El Lencero, a former hacienda, displays period furnishings outside town. Cerro Macuiltépetl, a wooded hill, offers trails and city views.

Xalapa appeals to culture-minded travelers and those who enjoy a city with a student feel. Excursions include Xico and the Cascada de Texolo, as well as Naolinco, known for its leather goods. Rain and fog are common, especially in summer, so layers are useful.

Best seasonOctober through May, when rain is less frequent, though mist can appear at any time.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for the museum, center and nearby towns.
ArrivingMost travelers arrive by bus from Mexico City or Veracruz; Veracruz airport is the closest major hub.
