About Sumidero Canyon

Sumidero Canyon is a deep gorge carved by the Grijalva River in central Chiapas, just north of the state capital, Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Its sheer walls rise steeply above a green river, and the canyon is protected as a national park. It holds a special place in Chiapas identity and appears on the state's coat of arms.

The classic way to experience the canyon is by boat. Launches leave from the riverfront at Chiapa de Corzo and travel upstream between the towering walls. Along the way, guides point out crocodiles basking on the banks, along with herons, pelicans and spider monkeys. Stops include the Cueva de Colores, a cave with a shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe, and the Árbol de Navidad waterfall, where mineral deposits and moss have formed a shape resembling a tree. The trip turns near the Chicoasén Dam, which created the reservoir upstream. From above, a road from Tuxtla leads to a series of miradores, or viewpoints, overlooking the gorge from different angles. Back in Chiapa de Corzo, visitors can explore the plaza and La Pila fountain, the Templo de Santo Domingo, the Museo de la Laca, and the archaeological zone and marimba museum.

The canyon suits nearly any traveler, as boat tours require little effort. Mornings bring calmer conditions and softer light for photography.

Best seasonThe dry season from November to April offers clearer water and comfortable boat rides.
Ideal stayA half day for the boat trip; a full day adds the viewpoints and Chiapa de Corzo.
ArrivingVisitors reach Chiapa de Corzo or the viewpoints by road from Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
