About Comitán

Comitán, formally Comitán de Domínguez, is a highland town in southeastern Chiapas, not far from the border with Guatemala. Its colonial core of whitewashed buildings, red-tiled roofs and sloping streets has earned it designation as a Pueblo Mágico. The town is closely tied to two notable figures, the senator Belisario Domínguez and the writer Rosario Castellanos, both of whom are honored in local museums.

The Parque Central Benito Juárez, with its gazebo and surrounding arcades, is the natural starting point, and the Templo de San Caralampio is among the town's most admired churches. The Casa Museo Doctor Belisario Domínguez preserves the home of the senator, remembered for speaking out against the Huerta regime. The Museo Rosario Castellanos honors the author who grew up here, while the Museo Arqueológico and the Museo de Arte Hermila Domínguez cover regional archaeology and art. Local markets bustle with produce and crafts. Comitán also serves as a base for nearby attractions: the ruins of Tenam Puente on a hillside outside town, the turquoise falls of Cascadas El Chiflón, the lakes of Lagunas de Montebello National Park and the swimmable Cenote Chukumaltik.

Comitán suits travelers looking for a calm, authentic town with a mild climate. It is quieter than San Cristóbal and makes an efficient base for the southern Chiapas lakes and waterfalls.

Best seasonThe dry season from November to April brings sunny days and clear lake water.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers the town and day trips to the lakes and falls.
ArrivingVisitors arrive by road, usually by bus or car from San Cristóbal along the Pan-American Highway.
