About Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido began as a small fishing and coffee port on Oaxaca's Pacific coast and grew into one of Mexico's best-known surf towns. It spreads along a string of beaches and rocky coves, each with a different mood, and keeps a lived-in, casual feel despite steady growth in recent years.

Playa Zicatela is the name surfers know, a long beach where powerful barrels draw professionals and spectators during big swells; swimming there is risky. Next to it, Playa Marinero is gentler and popular with beginners, while Playa Principal is where fishing boats land their catch beside the town's original seafront. Calmer water lies in the coves of Puerto Angelito and Playa Manzanillo, and Playa Carrizalillo, reached by a long staircase, is a favorite for learning to surf. Playa Bacocho to the west is known for sunsets and turtle hatchling releases. Evenings often end on El Adoquín, the pedestrian street in the old center.

Surfers and backpackers have long set the tone, though good food and nightlife now draw a wider crowd. Excursions are part of the rhythm: boat trips on Laguna de Manialtepec reveal birds and, on dark nights, glowing bioluminescence, and Lagunas de Chacahua National Park offers mangroves and a remote beach village. Turtle nesting at Playa Escobilla lies to the east.

Best seasonNovember through April for dry weather; big-wave surf peaks from roughly May to September.
Ideal stayFive days to a week leaves room for several beaches and lagoon trips.
ArrivingPuerto Escondido International Airport has direct flights from Mexico City and Oaxaca City.
