About Córdoba

Córdoba is a colonial city in central Veracruz, set in the foothills below the Pico de Orizaba volcano. Founded in the early seventeenth century, it became a center of sugar and coffee production. It is best known historically as the place where the Treaty of Córdoba, which recognized Mexican independence, was signed in 1821.

Parque 21 de Mayo, the main square, is lined with arcades and cafés and overlooked by the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción. Nearby, Parque Ecológico Paso Coyol offers green space within the city. Yanga, a short drive away, honors Gaspar Yanga, an African leader who established one of the first free settlements of formerly enslaved people in the Americas. Amatlán de los Reyes and Fortín de las Flores, known for flower nurseries and gardens, are easy excursions. The Puente de Metlac, a dramatic bridge over a deep ravine, is a striking sight. In nearby Orizaba, the Palacio de Hierro, a metal building prefabricated in Europe, and the Catedral de San Miguel Arcángel are highlights, while the Cerro del Borrego offers views from a cable car.

As a base for central Veracruz's mountains and coffee country, Córdoba is well placed. The Cascada del Elefante makes a scenic natural stop, and the climate is warm with frequent rain in summer.

Best seasonOctober through April for drier, more pleasant weather and clearer volcano views.
Ideal stayTwo days for Córdoba and Orizaba, longer for waterfalls and coffee towns.
ArrivingMost travelers arrive by bus or car along the highway between Puebla and Veracruz.
