About Coatepec

Coatepec is a coffee town in the hills just outside Xalapa, in central Veracruz. Surrounded by cloud forest and plantations, it grew wealthy on coffee and still celebrates that heritage, with roasters, cafés and fincas shaping local life. A Pueblo Mágico, its colonial streets, colorful houses and cool, misty air give it a gentle charm.

Parque Miguel Hidalgo, the leafy main square, is the town's meeting place, overlooked by the Parroquia de San Jerónimo. Casa Museo María Enriqueta honors the poet and writer María Enriqueta Camarillo, who was born in Coatepec. The Museo y Jardín de Orquídeas displays a remarkable collection of orchids, reflecting the region's rich plant life. Cerro de las Culebras offers a short hike to a viewpoint over the town, and Cascada Bola de Oro sits within a coffee estate where tours explain how beans are grown and processed. The Mercado Bioregional Coatl gathers local farmers and artisans.

Coffee lovers and unhurried walkers will feel at home. Nearby Xico has the Cascada de Texolo, a waterfall in a lush gorge, while Xalapa, a short drive away, offers museums and a larger city base. Rain and mist are frequent, especially in summer, so bring layers and comfortable shoes.

Best seasonOctober through May for drier days; coffee harvest is generally in the cooler months.
Ideal stayOne to two days, or a day trip from Xalapa.
ArrivingMost visitors arrive by bus or taxi from Xalapa, a short drive away.
