About Orizaba

Orizaba is a mid-sized city in the mountains of central Veracruz, set in a green valley beneath Pico de Orizaba, the country's highest volcano. It prospered as a textile and brewing center in the nineteenth century, and its streets still show that industrial wealth in mansions, churches, and civic buildings. The city has invested heavily in parks and riverside walks, giving it a tidy, walkable feel.

Its signature building is the Palacio de Hierro, a prefabricated iron pavilion shipped from Belgium in the late nineteenth century and now home to small museums. Nearby, the Cathedral of San Miguel Arcángel and the Palacio Municipal frame the historic center, and the shaded La Alameda park is a favorite spot for families. A long riverwalk and the Eco Parque Río follow the Río Orizaba with gardens and small animal enclosures. A cable car climbs Cerro del Borrego for views over the city and, on clear days, the snowy volcano. The BIORI botanical garden and the Poliforum Mier y Pesado add more green space. Adventurous visitors descend Los 500 Escalones to the Cascada del Elefante, a waterfall in a deep ravine.

Orizaba suits travelers who like easygoing city exploring with nature nearby. The climate is mild and often damp, and mornings tend to be clearer for volcano views.

Best seasonNovember to April brings clearer skies and better views of the volcano; summer is rainy.
Ideal stayTwo or three days covers the city, cable car and nearby waterfalls.
ArrivingOrizaba lies on the highway between Puebla and Veracruz, with frequent buses from Mexico City.
