About Mahahual

Mahahual is a small fishing village on the southern Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo, part of the area often marketed as the Costa Maya. It grew modestly after a cruise pier was built nearby, but outside of cruise days the town remains quiet, with sandy streets, simple guesthouses and a shoreline backed by palms.

The Malecón is a pedestrian boardwalk lined with restaurants, beach clubs and small shops, and a little lighthouse, the Faro de Mahahual, marks the waterfront. Yaya Beach and other stretches of sand offer calm swimming inside the reef. Maya Park, near the cruise area, provides adventure activities for visitors. The reef itself is the main draw: snorkeling and diving trips explore coral formations close to shore, and experienced divers travel out to Banco Chinchorro, a large protected atoll known for wrecks and marine life. The coastal road south passes beaches and mangroves on the way to Xcalak, a remote village near the Belize border with its own reef park. Inland, the Maya sites of Chacchoben and Kohunlich make good day trips.

Mahahual suits travelers seeking a low-key beach and good snorkeling without large resorts. It can feel busy when cruise ships dock, and quiet the rest of the time. Bacalar's lagoon is within driving distance.

Best seasonDecember through April is the dry season, with calm seas good for snorkeling and diving.
Ideal stayTwo to four days allows for beach time, reef trips and an inland ruin.
ArrivingTravelers usually drive or take a bus from Chetumal or Bacalar; Chetumal has the nearest airport.
