About Cuetzalan

Cuetzalan is a mountain town in the Sierra Nororiental of Puebla, where steep cobbled streets wind through misty, green hills. Nahua and Totonac communities make up much of the population, and indigenous traditions remain visible in dress, language and markets. It was among the first places designated a Pueblo Mágico, and its setting amid cloud forest and coffee farms gives it a strong sense of place.

The Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís dominates the main square, and dancers sometimes perform traditional rituals in its atrium, including the voladores. On a hill above town, the Santuario de Guadalupe is known for clay pots decorating its spire. Sunday is the best day to visit, when the tianguis fills the streets with produce, flowers and handwoven goods, while handicraft stalls nearby sell embroidered blouses and baskets. A short drive away, Yohualichan features a pre-Hispanic site with niche-decorated architecture similar to El Tajín. Cave tours, including the Gruta del Duende, and swims at the Cascada de las Brisas and other waterfalls are popular, as are visits to coffee plantations.

Walkers and market lovers get the most from the town. Expect frequent rain and fog, so waterproof gear and good shoes help. The pace is slow, and many visitors stay in small family-run hotels.

Best seasonOctober through May tends to be drier; Sundays offer the busiest and most colorful market.
Ideal stayTwo to three days allows time for the market, caves and waterfalls.
ArrivingMost visitors arrive by bus or car from Puebla, a winding drive through the mountains.
