About Jacksonville

Jacksonville is a large city in northeast Florida, spread along the St. Johns River near its mouth on the Atlantic. It is the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States, a result of consolidation with surrounding Duval County, so its neighborhoods, beaches and wild areas cover a vast territory. The city has deep roots in shipping, the military and finance.

Downtown, the Riverwalk follows both banks of the St. Johns, with bridges, fountains and views of the skyline. The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, in the historic Riverside neighborhood, holds a respected collection beside formal riverfront gardens. Riverside and Avondale are known for their historic homes, independent shops and restaurants, and they make a pleasant area to wander. Jacksonville Beach, along with nearby Atlantic and Neptune beaches, offers a casual seaside scene.

North of the city, Little Talbot Island State Park protects undeveloped beaches and maritime forest, and the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve includes salt marshes and Kingsley Plantation, a site that interprets the lives of enslaved people. The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is a family favorite. A day trip to St. Augustine, the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the country, makes an easy day trip down the coast. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times, while summer is hot and humid.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November bring warm, comfortable weather; summers are hot and stormy.
Ideal stayThree to four days covers the city, the beaches and a St. Augustine day trip.
ArrivingJacksonville International Airport is the main gateway, with Interstates 95 and 10 meeting in the city.
