About Lexington

Lexington is a fast-growing town of about 24,000 people in central South Carolina, roughly 15 miles west of Columbia and just south of Lake Murray. It is the seat of Lexington County, an area settled in the 1700s largely by German and Swiss farmers, whose Lutheran churches and family names are still part of local life.

The historic heart of town centers on Main Street, where older storefronts now hold restaurants, cafes and shops. The Lexington County Museum preserves a cluster of 19th-century buildings, including the 1832 John Fox House and log homes from the pioneer era, while the Lexington Old Mill, a converted 1890s textile mill on Twelve Mile Creek, is filled with shops, dining and event spaces.

The town hosts concerts at the Icehouse Amphitheater and family events in Virginia Hylton Park, and Gibson Pond Park offers a quiet boardwalk walk. Nearby Lake Murray, a large reservoir with about 650 miles of shoreline, is the region's playground for boating, fishing and summer evenings watching huge flocks of purple martins.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October; July evenings for the purple martin roost on Lake Murray.
Ideal stayOne day for downtown, the museum and the Old Mill, or a weekend with time on Lake Murray.
ArrivingColumbia Metropolitan Airport is about 15 minutes east; I-20 runs along the north side of town.
