About North Augusta
North Augusta is a city of about 24,000 people on the South Carolina bank of the Savannah River, directly across from Augusta, Georgia. It was founded in 1906 as a planned resort town, when the Hampton Terrace Hotel drew wealthy winter visitors to its hilltop, and the city still has leafy older neighborhoods and wide river views.
The city's newest landmark is Riverside Village, a riverfront district built around SRP Park, home of the Augusta GreenJackets minor league baseball team, with restaurants, a hotel and apartments overlooking the water. The North Augusta Greeneway, a paved trail of more than seven miles, follows old rail lines and the riverbank through woods and parks. Brick Pond Park, a restored wetland near the river, has boardwalks over ponds that are good for birdwatching, and Lake Olmstead and the Augusta Canal are just across the bridge.
North Augusta is the home of the Arts and Heritage Center, which shows local history and art in the municipal center. Across the river, Augusta offers the Riverwalk, the historic Augusta Canal with boat tours, the Morris Museum of Art and downtown's Broad Street, while Aiken's horse country is about 20 minutes east.
