About Sumter

Sumter is a city of about 43,000 people in the Midlands of South Carolina, roughly 45 miles east of Columbia. Named for Revolutionary War general Thomas Sumter, the "Gamecock" of the Carolina backcountry, it grew as a county seat and railroad town and is home to nearby Shaw Air Force Base.

The city's best-known sight is Swan Lake Iris Gardens, a park of black-water lakes, cypress trees and walking paths that is said to be the only public park in the United States with all eight species of swan. In spring the gardens bloom with Japanese iris, and the Sumter Iris Festival each May is one of the oldest festivals in the state. Downtown, the 1895 Sumter Opera House, with its tall clock tower, serves as city hall and a performing arts venue on Main Street, surrounded by historic brick storefronts, local restaurants and the Sumter County Gallery of Art.

The Sumter County Museum covers local history in a historic home with gardens and an archives center. Outside town, Poinsett State Park has hilly forest trails unusual for the Midlands, Manchester State Forest offers miles of riding and hiking, and Lake Marion, the state's largest lake, is known for fishing and boating. Congaree National Park, with its old-growth floodplain forest and boardwalk, is about an hour away.

Best seasonApril to May for the iris and azaleas at Swan Lake, or October to November for mild days.
Ideal stayOne to two days for Swan Lake Iris Gardens, downtown and the museum, plus a state park.
ArrivingColumbia Metropolitan Airport is about an hour west; US 378 and US 76 lead into town.
