Pooler is a fast-growing city of about 26,000 people in Chatham County, about 10 miles west of downtown Savannah and next to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Founded as a railroad stop in the 1800s and named for railroad official Robert Pooler, it stayed a small town for most of its history before booming in recent decades as a shopping, dining and lodging hub along Interstate 95 and Interstate 16.
Pooler's best-known attraction is the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force, a large museum honoring the World War II bomber and fighter crews of the Eighth Air Force, with restored aircraft, exhibits and a memorial garden. Tanger Outlets Savannah draws shoppers with an open-air village of outlet stores, fountains, a lighthouse-style landmark and shaded seating areas, and Pooler Parkway is lined with restaurants and hotels.
Pooler makes a convenient base for exploring the Georgia coast. Savannah's Historic District, with its oak-shaded squares, riverfront and historic homes, is about 20 minutes away, and the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, with its Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive through former rice fields, lies just to the north. Tybee Island's beaches are under an hour's drive east.
This large museum in Pooler tells the story of the Eighth Air Force, formed in Savannah in 1942, through aircraft, exhibits and personal stories from World War II to today. Highlights include a restored B-17 bomber, a chapel and a memorial garden. Allow two to three hours and check for guided tours.
Tanger Outlets Savannah is an open-air outlet mall in Pooler just off I-95, with dozens of brand-name stores for clothing, shoes, home goods and accessories. It is a popular stop for travelers heading to Savannah or the beaches. Weekday mornings are quietest, and the center often posts coupon offers online.
Pooler Parkway is the city's main commercial corridor near I-95, packed with restaurants ranging from Southern cooking and seafood to chains and casual cafes, plus shops and hotels. It is the easiest place in Pooler to find a meal. Traffic builds at rush hour and on weekends, so allow extra time.
Tom Triplett Community Park in Pooler is a large park built around lakes, with walking trails, fishing spots, picnic shelters, a playground and a dog park. It is a good place to stretch your legs after shopping or a museum visit. Bring bug spray in warm months and watch for wildlife near the water.
Oglethorpe Speedway Park is a dirt track racing venue on the edge of Pooler that hosts weekend races with late models, modifieds and other classes during the racing season. It offers a loud, local night out with grandstand seating. Check the race schedule online and bring ear protection.
Savannah National Wildlife Refuge protects freshwater marshes and former rice fields along the Savannah River a short drive from Pooler. The Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive passes impoundments where alligators, wading birds and migrating ducks are easy to spot. Go early or late in the day and bring binoculars.
