North Charleston is the third-largest city in South Carolina, home to about 115,000 people just inland from historic Charleston. It was incorporated in 1972 and grew around the Charleston Navy Base, which closed in 1996. Today the old base and its riverfront are being reused as parks, offices and event spaces, and the city is home to Charleston International Airport and Boeing's 787 Dreamliner plant.
Riverfront Park, on the former base along the Cooper River, has walking paths, public sculpture, a fishing pier and wide river views, and it hosts concerts and parts of the yearly North Charleston Arts Festival. Nearby, the Warren Lasch Conservation Center holds the H.L. Hunley, the Confederate submarine that became the first to sink an enemy warship, and it opens for guided tours on weekends.
Park Circle, one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, was laid out in the early 1900s as a planned garden city around a central park. Its East Montague Avenue strip is now known for local restaurants, coffee shops and breweries. The North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center brings concerts, Broadway tours and South Carolina Stingrays hockey, and Tanger Outlets and Wannamaker County Park are close by. Downtown Charleston and the plantations of Ashley River Road are a short drive away.
Best seasonMarch to May and October to November for warm, comfortable days by the river.
Ideal stayOne to two days for Park Circle, Riverfront Park and the Hunley, with a day in Charleston.
ArrivingCharleston International Airport is in the city, and Amtrak stops at the North Charleston station.
