Springfield is a city of about 62,000 people in Oregon's southern Willamette Valley, across the Willamette River from Eugene. Founded in the 1840s around a natural spring, it grew as a mill town processing timber from the surrounding forests, and the McKenzie River joins the Willamette just north of town.
Springfield's historic downtown on Main Street has restored buildings, murals and local restaurants. The Springfield History Museum is housed in a 1911 power substation, and the city is often said to have inspired the hometown of a famous animated TV family, whose creator grew up in nearby Portland.
The rivers are the city's great asset. Dorris Ranch, one of the oldest commercial filbert (hazelnut) orchards in the country, has trails along the Middle Fork of the Willamette, and the Willamette Riverbank Trail and Clearwater Park offer walks and rafting. The McKenzie River Highway leads east to waterfalls, hot springs and the Cascade Mountains.

Rotating displays and an interpretive center add variety. Admission is low cost or free; check opening days, as hours are limited during the week.
A living history farm and park run by Willamalane, home to one of the first commercial filbert (hazelnut) orchards in the United States. Visitors walk trails through old orchards and woods along the Middle Fork Willamette River and see historic farm buildings. It is free and good for a gentle walk.
A riverside park on the Willamette River next to downtown Springfield, with lawns, a playground, picnic shelters, a splash pad and paths along the water. It hosts summer concerts and community festivals. It is shady and pleasant on hot days; parking is close by and the park links to riverside paths.
A paved multi-use path running several miles along the Middle Fork of the Willamette River in Springfield, passing Dorris Ranch and natural areas. It is flat and good for walking, running and cycling, with river views and wildlife. Restrooms and parking are available at Dorris Ranch and other trailheads.
A natural area on the southeast edge of Springfield with hiking and mountain biking trails climbing through oak savanna and forest to ridge viewpoints over the valley. Trails are well built but steep in places. Go early in summer to avoid the heat, and follow posted rules for shared hiking and bike trails.
An indoor aquatic center run by Willamalane in Springfield, with a wave pool, water slide, a children's play area and a lap pool. It is popular with families year-round, especially on rainy Oregon days. Check the open swim schedule online, as wave times and public hours change with the seasons.
A clear, cold river that joins the Willamette near Springfield and runs up into the Cascade Mountains, popular for drift-boat fishing, rafting and riverside picnics. The McKenzie Highway follows it east to waterfalls and hot springs. Use designated river access points and wear life jackets on the water.
A food hub in a historic building in downtown Springfield that hosts a year-round indoor farmers market, food vendors and local producers, with a commercial kitchen used by small businesses. The market day brings fresh produce and baked goods. Check the schedule, as the market runs on set days only.
