About Pensacola

Pensacola sits at the far western end of the Florida Panhandle, on a bay sheltered by barrier islands of sugar-white sand. Spanish settlers first attempted a colony here in 1559, and the city later passed among Spain, France, Britain, the Confederacy and the United States, earning its nickname as the City of Five Flags. It is also closely tied to naval aviation and is home base for the Blue Angels.

Downtown, Historic Pensacola Village preserves restored homes and museums, and Plaza Ferdinand VII marks where Florida was formally transferred to the United States. Palafox Street is lined with restaurants, bars and a Saturday market. On Naval Air Station Pensacola, the National Naval Aviation Museum displays a remarkable range of aircraft, and the nearby Pensacola Lighthouse and Maritime Museum offers a climb to bay views; base access rules change, so check before going. Across the bridges, Pensacola Beach has a long Gulf pier for fishing and strolling, and Gulf Islands National Seashore protects Fort Pickens at the western tip of Santa Rosa Island. Big Lagoon State Park and Perdido Key's Johnson Beach offer quieter dunes and water.

Pensacola suits beach lovers who also enjoy history and an unpretentious downtown. Summer is hot and busy, and hurricane season runs from June through November.

Best seasonApril through May and September through October offer warm water and lighter crowds.
Ideal stayThree to four days balances downtown history, aviation and beach time.
ArrivingPensacola International Airport is the main gateway, with I-10 bringing road travelers into the city.
