Kenner is a city of about 65,000 people in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, stretching between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain just west of New Orleans. It grew from sugar plantations owned by the Kenner family and was incorporated in the 1850s. Today it is best known as the home of Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, which makes it the first stop for many visitors to the region.
The historic heart of the city is Rivertown, a few blocks of restored buildings near the Mississippi levee with a community theater, a farmers market and seasonal festivals. On the lakefront, Laketown offers a fishing pier, walking paths and wide views across Lake Pontchartrain, close to the Pontchartrain Center and the Treasure Chest Casino.
Kenner works well as a convenient base for exploring greater New Orleans, with the French Quarter about 20 minutes away by car. The levee bike path runs along the river, and the Bonnet Carre Spillway and plantation country along River Road are short drives to the west.

A riverside park and monument on the Mississippi levee in Rivertown that commemorates the French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, who traveled down the river in 1682. It offers benches and views of passing ships and barges. Visit around sunset, and pair it with a walk through Rivertown.
Kenner's lakefront park at the north end of Williams Boulevard, with a fishing pier, a walking path along the levee, picnic areas and wide views across Lake Pontchartrain. It hosts concerts and festivals in season. Bring a fishing line or just watch the sunset, and bring bug spray on warm evenings.
A casino in Kenner near Lake Pontchartrain, with slot machines, table games, restaurants and live entertainment. It is one of the few casinos close to New Orleans International Airport. Guests must be 21 or older; check the current location and hours before going, as the property has been moving to a new land-based site.
A large convention and event center on the lakefront in Kenner that hosts concerts, trade shows, comedy, sports events, home shows and festivals throughout the year. It sits next to Laketown and its lake views. Check the event calendar before visiting, and arrive early for big shows, as parking lots fill up.
A paved path on top of the Mississippi River levee that runs for miles along the east bank of Jefferson Parish, from near Audubon Park in New Orleans to Kenner. It is popular with cyclists, runners and walkers, with views of ships and the river. There is little shade, so go early in the morning and carry water.
A huge Army Corps of Engineers flood control structure just west of Kenner that diverts Mississippi River water into Lake Pontchartrain during floods. The open land around it is used for fishing, hiking, off-road riding and birding. When the gates are opened in a flood year, the sight draws big crowds.
