About Holland

A genuine 250-year-old Dutch windmill turns its sails above a park on the Black River, and every May millions of tulips bloom along the streets: Holland wears its heritage proudly. The city was founded in 1847 by Dutch Calvinist settlers led by Albertus Van Raalte, and their influence still shapes its churches, its food and its famous festival.

Downtown's Eighth Street is a model small-town main street, lined with shops and restaurants and kept clear in winter by a snowmelt system beneath the sidewalks. Hope College, founded by the same settlers, borders downtown with its historic stone halls, and the Holland Museum tells the story of the Dutch immigrants and the town they built.

West of town, Lake Macatawa opens through a channel into Lake Michigan, where Holland State Park offers wide sandy beaches and a view of the bright red lighthouse everyone calls Big Red. Tulip Time each May brings klompen dancers, parades and crowds. Grand Rapids is 40 minutes east and the art town of Saugatuck is just south.

Best seasonEarly to mid May for Tulip Time; June to August for Lake Michigan beaches.
Ideal stayTwo days, more in summer if you want beach time.
ArrivingGerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids is about 45 minutes away; Amtrak's Pere Marquette stops in Holland.
