About Concord

Concord governs New Hampshire from a granite State House with a golden dome, and since 1819 the legislature has met in the same chambers, a record no other state capitol matches. Yet the capital feels like a small New England city: a walkable Main Street lined with bookstores and cafes, steeples rising above brick blocks, and the Merrimack River curving past on the east.

Settled in the 1720s as Penacook and renamed Concord in 1765, the city earned fame for two exports. The Abbot-Downing Company built the Concord Coach, the stagecoach that carried mail and passengers across the American West, and Concord granite from nearby quarries went into the Library of Congress. President Franklin Pierce made his home here and is buried in Old North Cemetery, and the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center honors two New Hampshire space pioneers.

Concord sits at the crossroads of the state. Canterbury Shaker Village is about 20 minutes north, Lake Winnipesaukee under an hour, and the White Mountains and the Seacoast are each an easy day trip.

Best seasonLate September to mid-October for fall foliage; June to August for warm weather and outdoor events.
Ideal stayOne to two days for downtown, the State House and the museums.
ArrivingManchester-Boston Regional Airport is about 25 minutes south; Boston Logan is about 75 minutes away via I-93.
