About Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe straddles the California-Nevada line high in the Sierra Nevada, a large alpine lake known for its clarity and deep blue water. The Washoe people spent summers along its shores long before logging, silver-era wealth and resort development reshaped the basin. Today it is a year-round destination, with beaches and trails in summer and major ski areas in winter.

On the southwest shore, Emerald Bay is the most photographed spot, seen from Inspiration Point. A steep trail descends to Vikingsholm, a Scandinavian-style mansion from the 1920s, and a short climb from Eagle Falls leads to Eagle Lake. The Rubicon Trail follows the shoreline from D. L. Bliss State Park. Near South Lake Tahoe, the Tallac Historic Site preserves grand summer estates, and Taylor Creek is known for its autumn run of kokanee salmon. Heavenly ski resort rises above Stateline, where casinos line the Nevada side. Cave Rock juts over the eastern shore, and the granite boulders and clear coves of Sand Harbor connect to Incline Village by the Tahoe East Shore Trail. In the north, Tahoe City sits at the lake's outlet beside Fanny Bridge, and Palisades Tahoe in Olympic Valley hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics.

Tahoe suits families, skiers, hikers and paddlers. Summer weekends are crowded, and winter storms can close mountain roads or require chains. South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City are the main bases.

Best seasonJuly through September for swimming and hiking, or January through March for skiing.
Ideal stayThree to four days allows a loop around the lake and time on the trails or slopes.
ArrivingReno-Tahoe International Airport is the nearest major airport; Sacramento also works for the south and west shores.
