About Rocklin

Rocklin is a city in Placer County in the Sierra Nevada foothills, about 22 miles northeast of downtown Sacramento between Roseville and Loomis. Its name comes from the granite that defined its early years: after the Central Pacific Railroad arrived in 1864 during construction of the first transcontinental railroad, quarries opened across the area and Rocklin granite was shipped to build structures throughout California. The railroad also placed a roundhouse here, and the site is now a California Historical Landmark. Rocklin incorporated in 1893.

Today Rocklin is a fast-growing city of around 70,000 people, with newer neighborhoods such as Whitney Ranch and Stanford Ranch spreading over the oak-dotted hills. It is home to Sierra College and William Jessup University, and Interstate 80 and Highway 65 link it to Sacramento, the Sierra and Lake Tahoe. The historic core along Pacific Street, part of old US Route 40, keeps reminders of the railroad and quarry town.

For visitors, Quarry Park is the standout: a former granite quarry turned into a park with an amphitheater for summer concerts and Quarry Park Adventures, where climbing walls, ropes courses and zip lines run over the old quarry pit. The Rocklin History Museum and Old St. Mary's Chapel tell the story of the quarrying families, Johnson-Springview Park offers sports fields and a popular disc golf course, and the Capitol Corridor trains at Rocklin station make an easy link to Sacramento and the Bay Area.

Best seasonMarch to June and September to November for mild weather; summers are hot and dry.
Ideal stayA half day for Quarry Park, the history museum and downtown, or longer as a base for Sacramento and the foothills.
ArrivingSacramento International Airport is about 30 minutes away, Amtrak Capitol Corridor trains stop at Rocklin station, and Interstate 80 and Highway 65 run through the city.
