About Suisun

Tidal sloughs reach right up to Main Street in Suisun City, where sailboats tie up a block from the train depot and the vast Suisun Marsh begins at the edge of town. The city sits at the head of Suisun Slough in Solano County, halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento, and shares a border with larger Fairfield.

The name comes from the Suisunes, a Patwin people whose leader, known as Chief Solano, also gave the county its name. Schooners once carried grain and produce from here down the slough to San Francisco Bay, and Suisun City grew up in the 1850s as a small port and later a railroad stop. A revival of the old waterfront from the 1990s added a promenade, a marina and Harbor Plaza while keeping the historic storefronts of Main Street.

Today visitors stroll the waterfront, paddle the slough and head south into the marsh, the largest brackish wetland on the west coast, to see tule elk and waterfowl at Grizzly Island. The wineries of Suisun Valley, the Jelly Belly factory in Fairfield and the Sacramento River Delta are all short drives away.

Best seasonOctober to April for migrating waterfowl in the marsh; May to September for waterfront evenings and paddling.
Ideal stayHalf a day for the waterfront, or a full day with a drive into the Suisun Marsh.
ArrivingAmtrak Capitol Corridor trains stop at Suisun-Fairfield station on Main Street; Sacramento and Oakland airports are each about 45 minutes away.
