About Merced

Merced is the county seat of Merced County in the heart of California's San Joaquin Valley, about two hours from the Bay Area and an hour and a half from Yosemite Valley. It was founded in 1872 when the Central Pacific Railroad built its line through the valley, and it took its name from the nearby Merced River, named by Spanish explorers for Our Lady of Mercy. The city was incorporated in 1889.

Calling itself the Gateway to Yosemite, Merced has long welcomed travelers on their way to the national park. Downtown along Main Street keeps the restored 1931 Merced Theatre, historic hotels and storefronts, and the grand 1875 Merced County Courthouse, now a museum.

The University of California, Merced, opened in 2005, brings a young energy to the city. Nearby, the Castle Air Museum displays dozens of historic military aircraft, and the Merced National Wildlife Refuge draws huge flocks of migrating cranes, geese and ducks in winter.

Best seasonMarch to May and September to November; summers are hot, and winter brings fog and migrating birds.
Ideal stayOne day for downtown, the courthouse museum and Castle Air Museum, or a stop on the way to Yosemite.
ArrivingFresno Yosemite International Airport is about an hour away, Amtrak San Joaquins trains stop in Merced, and State Route 99 runs through the city.
