Its painting galleries are strongest in 19th-century American and European art, with a celebrated group of works by Albert Bierstadt and other landscape painters, and it holds a large collection of illustrations by J. C. Leyendecker, the artist behind many classic Saturday Evening Post covers. Downstairs, history exhibits cover the city's Gold Rush beginnings and its role in farm machinery, including the track-type tractors developed by Holt Manufacturing in Stockton. Plan about two hours, then walk the park.
