About Livermore

Livermore lies in the Livermore Valley at the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area, ringed by golden hills and dotted with vineyards. The town was founded in 1869 and named for Robert Livermore, an English sailor turned rancher who settled in the valley in the 1830s. It grew as a railroad and farming town and was incorporated in 1876.

The valley is one of California's oldest wine regions, where families such as the Wentes and Concannons planted vines in the 1880s, and today dozens of wineries welcome visitors. Livermore is also home to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a major center of science and research.

Downtown along First Street has restaurants, the Bankhead Theater and the historic flagpole, and the Carnegie Library now houses a history center. Livermore is famous for the Centennial Light, a bulb glowing in a fire station since 1901, and for its long-running rodeo. Del Valle Regional Park offers a lake and trails in the hills.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October; summers are hot and dry, and spring hills are green.
Ideal stayOne to two days for wine tasting, downtown, the Centennial Light and a day at Del Valle Regional Park.
ArrivingOakland International Airport is about 30 minutes away, ACE trains and BART at nearby Dublin/Pleasanton serve the area, and Interstate 580 runs through the city.
